"Ask any American for their phone number, and I bet they will read it out like this: "three oh five, two three four, seven six four two"
My old phone number (in the US) was 555-8279. I almost always said "five, five, five (pause) eighty two, seventy nine" (unless I knew I was talking to a foreigner).
At Siemens in Erlangen, my number was 84 6789. I always said "vierundachtzig, sechs, sieben, acht, neun". People asked why I didn't say "siebenundsechzig, neunundachtzig", but "sech, sieben, acht, neun" just seemed so easy for someone to remember.
