This is a term that should be added to LEO, since it's extremely important for any company operating in the US (and probably other countries as well). If anyone can confirm the German side, I'd be happy to propose it.

@nataan: This means that the contractor must buy insurance to pay for expenses such as medical treatment, disability payments, and damages in a civil lawsuit, in case a worker is injured while working. The insurance is very expensive, because there is a risk that a jury can decide that the employer should pay millions of dollars.

'Agent' probably has a specific legal definition, but I am not a lawyer. In my opinion, you should really pay a lawyer or a legal translator to translate something this important.

@nataan: Ah. I do see the problem. In that case, business representative sounds like a reasonable and suitably vague guess. Another alternative might simply be a subcontractor; sorry, I really don't know for sure.

Just out of curiosity, and in case this ever gets to New Entry, does anyone happen to know if 'workers' compensation' is also used in BE, or is there some other term?

@hm-us - a quick google using "workers' compensation" and site:.ie revealed that most hits are references to US law, so it appears to suggest that the term is not used in BE in the same way as in AE.

"personal accident insurance" *may* be what is used in BE, but other natives will have to corroborate this.

@hm -- us: The term "Arbeitsunfallversicherung" is not used in Germany any more, if it ever was. The technical term is "Berufsunfallversicherung". It is mandatory for all employed and paid by the employer. Covered are all accidents at the workplace and on the way to the workplace and back plus all [Berufskrankheiten] illnesses which are related to the type of work. The insurance is operated by semi-public (?) entities call "Berufsgenossenschaften", one for each type of industry (metal, farming, health etc.).

my "Fachwörterbuch der Personalarbeit" calls it a Betriebsunfallversicherung, while my "Wörterbuch der Versicherung" has:
worker's (sic!) compensation = Berufsunfall- und Krankenversicherung

When National Insurance was introduced in the UK, there was a benefit included called Industrial Injuries Benefit for ilness or injury resulting from accidents at work. It did not however prevent workers taking claims against their employers for negligence.However I understand employers will have some sort of insurance against such claims.
I am not an employer, but I have Personal Injury insurance to cover me against claims of that nature. Very few householders in the UK,if any,do not have similar insurance.My house is insured and in that insurance there is a personal injury clause to cover me for claims against me for personal injury. For example,if a tree in my garden was blown down and struck someone, injurying them in some way,I would be covered if that person took a claim against me. Everytime I go on holiday, my holiday insurance includes a similar clause.

@JGMcI: I'm afraid your mixing two concepts now. The insurance you have looks like a liability insurance. The "Berufsunfallversicherung" is an accident insurance which also covers work-related illnesses and accidents that occur commuting from home to work and back. Premiums are paid by the employer, but the insured persons are the employees. This insurance does not protect the employer against any claims made by the employer or the Berufsunfallversicherung (afaik). BTW, students of all ages (preschool to university) are protected under the same scheme, and so are volunteer workers under certain circumstances.
