    neither - nor + Verb

    Comment
    Muss es heißen:

Neither A nor B provides oder

    Neither A nor B provide?

Also, steht das Verb im Plural, weil es ja zwei Subjekte gibt oder im Singular, weil sie sich ja ausschließen?

    Vielen Dank!

Fowler's says that if both subjects are singular and in the third person, the verb shouuld normally be singular.

Ok, thank you - this corresponds with my "feeling" - but one should never trust feelings when it comes to a foreign language... ;-)

Und wie wäre es mit "Neither you nor he ..."? oder "Neither he nor you ..." Wären das überhaupt akzeptable Konstruktionen?

Fowler said you should just avoid constructions like that when there is "a difference in number or person between the subject of the 'neither' member and that of the 'nor' member". Jesperson and CGEL (according to Fowler's) say that the plural is more natural in speech.
