You are right to look in the dictionary for definitions. Google image search results are determined by keywords and the logic is not one of sign <> meaning.

That is definitely so, but it could theoretically be a common error (e.g. jive instead of jibe, less instead of few). Best I can tell from trawling the internet for a good twenty minutes, if so, it would seem to be an exceedingly rare error, because I could not find any instances in textual contexts.

#2 I agree that Google image search or even Search All isn't fool proof. We have tooling called thread mills in our industry. (And before anyone says anything, we have endless inter-departmental discussions as to whether it is one word or two...) To our annoyance, Google search delights in wondering if we mean treadmills...

Zu verlässlicheren, i.e. weniger google-interpretierten, Suchergebnissen trägt bei, den Suchbegriff in Anführungszeichen zu setzen, also ausdrücklich nach dem exakten Wortlaut zu suchen.

Dabei interpretiert Google übrigens Leerzeichen und Bindestrich (-) als identisches "Zeichen", liefert also Ergenisse für beide Varianten an der jeweiligen Stelle. D.h. eine Suche nach "thread mills" erbringt die selben Ergebnisse wie eine Suche nach "thread-mills".

FWIW: Auf dieser US-Website für Optiker (!) wird "looking glass" offenkundig im Sinn von "magnifying glass" verwendet.

Plausible These! So ganz selten scheint eine solchermaßen falsche Verwendung nicht zu sein.

Das scheint ein sehr neuzeitlicher Ausdruck zu sein. Gurgelbux weist eine einzige Verwendung vor 2000 nach, in einer obskuren indischen Quelle. Anscheinend trifft das Aufkommen der Wendung under a looking glass mit der Zeit zusammen, als Carroll der Entschlackung der Lehrpläne zum Opfer fiel.

(Obwohl ich irgendwie John Lennon in Verdacht habe, für dieses anhaltende Missverständnis verantwortlich zu sein: Picture yourself on a train in a station/With plasticine porters with looking glass ties)
