    Aussprache garage Farage

    Comment

Für die Aussprache von "garage" werden im Lexikon zwei genannt. Ist das Englich / Amerikanisch, oder sind beide erlaubt?

Wie spricht sich denn dann der englische Ukip-Politiker "Farage" aus? Muss man ihn da selbst fragen? :- )

Also hier (AE) reimen sich beispielsweise garage, Farage und barrage

I don't know which pronunciation is more common in the UK, but I say garridge (where the i is really a schwa). This rhymes with neither barrage or Farage :)

A further complication is that there are really three pronunciations:

    garridge (UK)
    GA-rage (UK)
    ga-RAGE (US)

I would have said Fa-RAGE to rhyme with the US pronunciation, but the BBC newsreader has just literally this second said FA-rage!

    That's what Wikipedia says, /ˈfærɑːʒ/.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigel_Farage

I wonder if, for the words ending in -age from French that aren't proper names, that's actually a generalizable rule: that AE usually stresses that last syllable but BE usually doesn't.

    AE
    garage
    massage
    barrage
    collage
    mirage

all have the stress on /ɑːʒ/.

I'm with hm--us on massage / barrage / collage / mirage, but I pronounce garage with a "J" sound (as do many AE speakers): /gə'rɑːʤ/

Interesting, hadn't thought about that. So do I, sometimes, or probably most of the time.

And indeed I (BE) would stress the first syllable of massage/barrage/collage/mirage which is in agreement with hm--us's 'rule'.

I pronounce "garage" to rhyme with "bridge", no schwa for me.

Always thought it should rhyme with "sewage", though ...

Mein Tablet hat beim Diktieren aus "Farage" mal "verarschen" gemacht. Fand ich auch nicht unpassend.

(Sorry. Aber ich fand das wirklich zu schön, und es passt hier so gut.)
