Maybe I wasn't clear, but all I was trying to say is that it just seems to me that there are many cases where the two are used roughly interchangeably, but with 'nonprofit' being considerably the more common of the two, especially in combinations or collocations. That is, my impression is that while a technical or legal difference may exist, people don't usually take it into account except in a technical or legal context.
