    Connotations of "raison de recherche"

    Context: I write in my dissertation: "Fundamental to any research is the specification of the author’s Erkenntnisinteresse, that is, one’s own perspective in doing research. To understand my personal raison de recherche, let us consider ..."


    Intended meaning: Wordplay with "raison d'être" in order to coin a new term for "author's perspective".


    Questions: Is the term understandable the way I use it? Are there any connotations that I'm not aware of? Why is the term not in more popular use? Are there any alternative, better terms?

    I'd suggest to ask this question again in the German-English forum ... as it's mostly about the understanding of the French term "raison d'être" in English by NES ...


    ... and - above all - there are more people seeing it ... people who are able to answer it ...

    I was going to answer you, tilmanb, but I wanted to give our users time to answer you first. You are not at the wrong place in this forum! We welcome all contributions.


    For French speaking people, the wordplay between "raison d'être" and "raison de recherche" wouldn't be obvious. Besides, you can't say "raison de recherche" in French. However, English speaking people might understand your wordplay.

    I would say "raison pour laquelle j'ai décidé d'effectuer des travaux de recherche sur XXX". I can not think of anything else right now.
