    I have a webmeeting with British scientists soon and I would like to know how to pronounce "Chitosan" in English, the question pertains to both "i" and "a" in the word.


    "i" like "like", as usual in English or similar to German?

    "a" like "lane" (usual in English) or similar to German?

    Wikipedia: "Chitosan/ˈkaɪtəsæn/ is a linear polysaccharide composed of randomly distributed β-(1→4)-linked D-glucosamine (deacetylated unit) and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (acetylated unit)."

    The end rhymes with "man", i.e. the "a" is not like any German sound :)


    The Google pronunciation is good.

    The guy in #2 says it very clearly, and the pronunciation of "Chitosan" is not too far off the British version, although his accent is otherwise very different :) (Can anyone say where he comes from? Southern USA??)

    M-W, with its non-IPA method of showing pronunciation, writes it as ˈkītəˌsan, which is pretty much the same as in #1.

    Yes, the guy has a pretty strong accent, some sort of southern-USA-based, but some folks in non-Southern, chiefly rural or farming/ranching areas of the US have similar accents (such as parts of Nebraska or even Southern Illinois and Indiana). Shudder. .

    Thank you. Unexpectedly, I also learned how to pronounce "chitin", which I would have gotten completely wrong.

    Ich hab's gerade noch mal probiert: bei dem Link in #2 lande ich ganz am Anfang. Da das öfter mal passiert, die Stelle am besten dazuschreiben, dann findet man es auf jeden Fall.

    Das Entscheidende scheint das ?t=70 zu sein, das fehlt in #2.
