    Verneinung von have im simple past.


    Ist der folgende Satz richtig?


    The were hungry because they had not enough food.


    Oder MUSS es sind't have enough... heißen?

    They were hungry because they didn't have enough food.

    Der ersten Antwort (also der von Martin -- cal) kannst du vertrauen, er ist Amerikaner.

    Vor allem aber sollte damit auch klar sein, dass der erste Satz, den du vorschlägst, nicht richtig ist. Nur bei Hilfsverben ist die direkte Verneinung in der Vergangenheit korrekt, alle anderen Verben brauchen die erweiterte Konstruktion mit didn't (kurz für did not).

    Davor stehen vier Beispiele:

    • You hadn't dinner.
    • Had you not dinner?

    "nicht sehr oft gebraucht" scheint mir noch stark untertrieben zu sein!

    I certainly don’t want to suggest that it’s anything like as common as the standard “because they didn’t have enough food,” but “because they hadn’t enough food” isn’t wrong. It’s a slightly higher register, more written than spoken E.

     

    (I agree that all of the 3- and 4-word sentences in #9 are incorrect.)

     

    “because they hadn’t got enough food” (#6) is also possible. How common it is I wouldn’t like to say. At any rate more colloquial than the standard “didn’t have,” and far less formal than “hadn’t enough.”

    Wirklich nur aus Interesse: hast du dafür mal ein oder mehrere Beispiele? Mir (BE-geprägt) kommt das schräg vor, auch wenn mir Bions Beispiele in #11 doch zahlreich begegnet sind. Mir kommen sie immer etwas zu schriftsprachlich und gestelzt vor, was sie ja nicht zugleich falsch macht. Es klingt eher nach Behörde oder z.B. Juristensprech.

    Possibly you’ve mainly come across misuses or abuses of the two forms. I see little to take exception to in them—when they’re used appropriately. There are plenty of online examples of “they hadn’t enough X” that don’t fit the negative characterization of your last sentence and a half.

    Leider keine konkreten, reverend, so genau erinnere ich mich an Bücher nicht :-). Aber es waren ganz normale Sätze im Dialog wie "I just hadn't the time".


    Edit: Selbst Harry Potter sagt im Film irgendwo "I haven't any money", fällt mir gerade ein. (Leider schlechte Qualität: https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/52048008-2c21-44...)

    Ach, ich kann mich sogar dran erinnern, mich bei dem Film gewundert zu haben, warum er das so sagt. Für mich klang es halt altertümlich, offenbar etwas zu Unrecht (s. #15). Im Buch habe ich dann doch nicht gesucht, obwohl ich es zuhause hatte.
