Correct or incorrect? Normally, I'd say it is S-V-O, so that would be

For Michael, Jim is a replacement for his father.

Sounds wrong to me. Should be ...death does Michael decide to...

"learns" sounds better, or just "learned". The tense depends on context or what you are trying to say. I'm sure someone else can explain tenses better than me.
In your second post, your second wording is correct - the comma is crucial. I can't tell you the rules governing this word order inversion, but I'm fairly certain my comments are correct concerning your examples.

The inversion is correct in (1).
However, it depends on what kind of text this is as to whether you write 'does' or 'did'. If you are telling/writing a story of which you know the final outcome, it is common to use the present tense

i.e. Only after his father's death does he decide to...

However if you are just having a conversation and this sentence comes up, then you should use 'did'. It is also possible to write 'did' in the example above, but it is important to be consistent throughout the text.

And I agree with wpr (AE) with regards to the second post.

Sorry, there should also be a comma between 'death' and 'does/did' :)

I'm back with another problem:

1. So great was her anger that she killed him.

This is a prime example of partial inversion. So+adjective triggers off this kind of word order.

2. Now, I wonder what happens if there is no adjective. Take the following statement for example:

His father had taught him a lot about music when he was younger. He introduced him to classical music. Many years later he applied for a job as a music teacher. In the interview they asked him many questions about Mozart. Some of them he could answer only because he remembered some of the things his father told him once.

SO DID his father help him to get the job (in a way).

In the above sentence, "so" is not followed by an adjective. Is this construction correct or not (I'd say That's how ....helped him). Personally, I feel that it is incorrect, but the, I am not a native speaker.

Das 'so' in den beiden Sätzen hat je andere Funktion: im ersten ist es adverbielle Partikel zur Angabe eines Umstands, der einen Konsekutivsatz nach sich zieht, im zweiten ist es konsekutive Konjunktion. Möchtest Du das Modale betonen, wäre ein 'thus' wohl angebrachter.

I would use 'That's how' in conversation and 'In this way' in writing:

In this way his father helped him to get the job.


In a 19th-century text, maybe a translation of a Grimm fairy tale or an Arthurian legend, something with deliberately elevated or (pseudo-)archaic language, you might indeed see a construction like (I'm making this up)

Thus did his father aid him in his quest.

More examples on the web: "thus did". But that sounds both literary and old-fashioned, so I'm not recommending it for the present day. If you use this construction, you need 'thus' rather than 'so,' but 'thus' in and of itself is rather elevated diction, so even 'Thus his father helped him,' though correct, is somewhat too formal in style for most modern purposes.

Peter {de} is right to point out that 'so' has a completely different function in your two sentences in post #5. However, in his second sentence, adding 'did' (without inversion) would have yet another function, namely, emphasis or contradiction:

So his father did help him (after all) = Also sein Vater hat ihm doch geholfen
