1. I don't want to start a thread fight a la man/men, cup/cap, but central Canadians definitely
do say aboot as far as US EARS ARE CONCERNED> I've spoken with Canadians who have said, more or less, "We don"t say 'Hoos' when we are talking aboot abode." The problem is that these Canadians use a sound that is not the same as the central US ou but also not the same as the Canadian oo; for the US listener, it is so close to oo that it is noted as such.
2. The difference in both vocabulary and pronunciation between some-one from London, Ontario and some-one from St. Paul or Detroit is a lot less than the difference between any of them and some-one from Birmingham, Alabama or Boston (generally speaking).
