It was a bit tongue in cheek but, yes, hockey is very popular in Canada and particularly in Montreal (my nick is "go habs go" - do I need to say more?)

Hockey is definitely important. There might be the possibility that you stumble into a Lacrosse game.
I agree with go_Habs_go about poutine, toque, and Kraft dinner. There is a clear distinction between maple syrup and this strange Aunt Jemima stuff a.k.a corn syrup.

For the rest: If your French has a distinct German accent and your French vocabulary is limited, nearly everybody will talk with you in English after you mutilated the French language. Without the obvious non-English accent people often insist on French, with an US- or otherwise English accent speaking French there are many that will insist on French.

When chatting with them Canadians, just say "...,eh?" at the end of every sentence you say. They are so going to love that! ;-)

AGB: Lacrosse may be our official national sport but it's not very common at all.

don't worry - the small differences in Umgangssprache between American and Canadian English are not big enough to give you problems in Canada - think border and TV crossover
- Poutine is a "dish" if it can be called that, that you will either love or hate (French fries with cheese curds and gravy)
- if you are going in summer, you won't need a touque (a knit hat) and if you say mac and cheese, they'll still understand you LOL
- they are hockey crazy, including women, but it's summer! not sure how much baseball there is in Mtl anymore, I think they sold the Expos
and Bama Torsten, I know you can't really believe that, eh?!
Just go enjoy yourself without obsessing. Mtl is a great city!!

@Traveller: There are numerous Canadian radio stations available on the internet. Why don't you just find a CBC radio station and just listen? That should help you prepare for your trip.
The website of the Montreal Gazette newspaper could also be quite helpful.

I don't want to start a thread fight a la man/men, cup/cap, but central Canadians definitely do say aboot as far as US EARS ARE CONCERNED> I've spoken with Canadians who have said, more or less, "We don"t say 'Hoos' when we are talking aboot abode." The problem is that these Canadians use a sound that is not the same as the central US ou but also not the same as the Canadian oo; for the US listener, it is so close to oo that it is noted as such.

2. The difference in both vocabulary and pronunciation between some-one from London, Ontario and some-one from St. Paul or Detroit is a lot less than the difference between any of them and some-one from Birmingham, Alabama or Boston (generally speaking).
