    appellierend(er Charakter)

    Sources
    Meine lieben Leoniden,
Trotz angestrengtem Nachdenken und Suchen finde ich nicht heraus, wie ich
    "der appellierende Charakter des Gedichts"
übersetzen kann, da "appellative" scheinbar für etwas anderes steht...
    Könntet ihr mir bitte weiterhelfen?

    Doesn't appealing mean attractive?
I'm looking for an adjective to describe a poem that "urges" someone to do something, e.g. "fight for freedom".

    Dictionary: appeal

I agree it could be misleading, so maybe the "urgent aspect"?

If you're looking for an adjective that suggests that its object encourages someone to do something, try any of the following:

    motivational/motivating (probably best)
    inspirational/inspiring
    inciting

So appealing is used but might be misleading?
If that's the case, I'll use appealing. The context makes it quite clear that I'm not talking about an attractive poem ;) I just wasn't sure whether appealing is used as the adjective of "to appeal".

    pleading?

I would use any of noli's (X/Y/Z) suggestions. They are all more fitting than "appealing".

I'd say: the X/Y/Z nature of the poem

All at #4 sound best to me, esp. inspirational/motivational

Actually I don't have too many problems with "appellative" (as an adjective), as e.g. here in a linguistic context:

But maybe strictly speaking it's a misuse of the word.

The word that occurs to me now, though, which ought to fit the bill here is

    "exhortative"
