    This comes from instructions for tests to determine liquid density:

    In einem Spindelzylinder wird die zu bestimmende Flüssigkeit eingefüllt und gemäß Produktspezifikation temperiert. Anschließend wird mit Hilfe eines Aräometers die Dichte am Spindelstab unterhalb des Meniskus abgelesen

    The only translation I've found is "spindle cylinder" but a google search doesn't really support this. Does anyone know the correct technical term for this type of cylinder with a spindle?

    #1 is definitely wrong, and I'm quite sure that "spindle cylinder" is wrong as well. I'd agree with hydrometer. To check it out, see the article in English Wiki.
