Seeing that is clear (albeit with gibson's proviso) from the context what sort of frame is meant, I would just say 'frame'. Incidentally, eyeglass(es) is AE in this sense.

(When I was young, an 'eyeglass' was the name given to the object which I now find described as a 'glass eye wash cup'. But I haven't been able to find any reference for this meaning.)

Wenn ich also bereits Gläser habe und diese in eine neue Fassung eingesetzt haben möchte, so kann ich das bei einer Korrektionsfassung ohne Aufpreis machen lassen. Wenn ich aber eine Sonnenbrille erwerbe und in diese Gläser eingeschliffen haben möchte, muss ich diese Arbeit bezahlen (zumindest theoretisch, meist geht das auf Kulanz auch kostenlos).

Das Beispiel im OP finde ich allerdings seltsam: Normalerweise sage ich doch einfach: "Ich lasse mir eine neue Brille machen, ich habe mir eine schöne Fassung ausgesucht."

I guess it would be clear that a grame for glasses is meant, but the example given as context had every detail spelled out so meticulously, my suggestion seemed like it might fit.

I used to work for an optician, and while I never heard of frames being referred to as "corrective" (I would have pointed this out in my first response if I'd had more time), I also know that you can't necessarily have corrective lenses put into just any frames. Not by a responsible optician, anyway. Occasionally someone would bring in a cheap pair of sunglasses, for example, and my boss would refuse to put corrective lenses in them.

We wouldn't say "prescription frame" because frames are generally not prescribed. You could say, "frames that are made for (or suitable for) prescription glasses" but that would be quite long and unnecessarily specific - I think the result would be a case of "the words are English, but the language isn't," if you see what I mean.

Ich habe 4 'normale' Brillen und 2 Sonnenbrillen mit Korrekturgläsern (oder wie immer das heißt) und habe noch nie das Wort 'Korrektionsfassung' gehört oder benutzt. Das soll nicht heißen, dass es das nicht gibt, aber im normalen Gespräch, auch beim Optiker oder Augenarzt, halte ich es für vollkommen ungewöhnlich.

Deshalb finde ich die Frage nicht unwichtig, ob es diese (in meiner Erfahrung) seltsame Ausdrucksweise im Englisch reflektiert werden soll, wie in #11 zum Beispiel.

rosenstein, wo genau siehst du das Problem? Wenn ich eine 1:1-"Übersetzung" wünsche, konsultiere ich ein Wörterbuch oder eine Übersetzungsmaschine. Wenn ich aber wissen will, ob "man das so sagen kann", dann frage ich bei LEO nach. Und ich bin oft froh, wenn ich dabei scheinbar nebensächliche Informationen erhalte. Im konkreten Fall kommt dazu, dass ein Fachbegriff in einem allgemeinsprachlichen Kontext erfragt wird. Darauf hinzuweisen ist doch nicht schlimm, oder?

Re my response #3: many translation problems are non-problems. One of the arts of translation is recognizing this. In the context, there is absolutely no need to qualify the word 'frame'. It is clearly not a picture frame or a bicycle frame or even a frame for sunglasses. (And I also confirmed that 'frame' was the word for 'Fassung'.)

@ # 5. Look on eBay. One of these was a standard item in my parents' bathroom, and sometimes I wish I had one. The rim is shaped to fit the eye socket, so that you fill the thing with water and hold it to your eye and hope you can wash out the foreign object that has got in. I think they are also called 'eye-baths'. But my mama called it an 'eye-glass'.

Back OT: context is, as always, extremely important. If I were translating this for Joe Bloggs / John Doe, I would uses glasses and frames. Not prescription frames or spectacles or anything like that. If I were to translate this for the Association of British Dispensing Opticians, then I would use the wording which they use. N.B. there is a difference in the wording used under professionals and that used for the public - clear if clicking through the link provided above, I think.
