FWIW:
Man findet z.B.
Pupils need us to appear calm even if inwardly we're freaking out!..
oder
this is actually a real picture of me inwardly freaking out ...
I went out to eat with my parents today at Mekong restaurant, while we were eating i noticed a dead cockroach in my food, of course i was freaking out inwardly
"Inwardly" doesn't sound terribly idiomatic to me here, probably because it's a somewhat formal or literary word and "freaking out" is very colloquial. I'd use "internally".
That being said, it would sound more natural to my ears to say something like, "He was freaking out, but tried not to show it." That expresses the same idea.
