Ich verstehe das hier im Sinn von überhöhen (to exaggerate, to inflate), aufbauschen (to hype, to sensationalize), wobei auch das Erheben oder Erhöhen (i.S.v. to exalt, to elevate) mitschwingt.

"Elevate" is perfect, I think -- it retains the "hinauf"/upwards element and also indicates (as does the original) that it's making him out to be more or better than he deserves. Thank you!
