    3 mal 3

    Quellen
Wie rechnet man auf Englisch in den Grundrechenarten?
Also: mal, plus, minus geteilt, gleich/macht.
    "3 plus 3 makes 6" for example?
    Thanks for your help!

Or "divided by" (as we write!)

Usually, I think, "3 times 3". Also "Three threes are/make nine".

NB: "Three by three" is used only when you're describing the size of an area: the room is three by three metres in size.

    Three times three is nine.
    Three plus three is six.
    Three minus three is zero.
Three divided by three is one.

In school my son is learning multiplication, addition, subtraction and division.

    3 times 3 = 9

    (3 by 3 are square whatever, 3 x 3" = 9 square inches, for instance)

Second CM2DD's answer, but I am also pretty sure we used to say
"three threes are nine" when reciting times tables in class - in a normal maths exercise it was still "three times three..."

The answer to your question, restitutus, is yes. This means "two at a time", or "in twos". It's got nothing to do with multiplication (in the arithmetical sense!).

I always thought the animals going in two by two was very much about multiplication, but you obviously didn't want to go there.

Ok. That means you always say "is 4".
Is "makes 4" or "are 4" wrong or unusual?
    Thanks a lot!

"is 4" and "makes 4" are right, "are 4" is wrong.

#10 No, you can say "makes" too. I'm not sure I'd use "are" except in the form "Three threes are nine".
