    Ich gehe durch die Strassen und ploetzlich steht dieser Mann vor mir.

    Ich muss gerade viel uebersetzten, und zwar Reiseberichte. Im Deutschen ist oft der ganze Bericht im Praesenz geschrieben. Darf man das im Englischen ueberhaupt so machen? Oder muss es dann etwa: "I am going though the streets" heissen... ?

    Wenn man die Gegenwart als "historische Gegenwart" verwendet, dann eben die einfache Gegenwart, nicht die Verlaufsform.

    Allerdings in deinem Beispiel braucht man doch die Verlaufsform in der 2. Hälfte:

    "I go through the streets and suddenly this man is standing in front of me."

    As I'm walking along /through the streets, this man suddenly appears / is standing before me / in front of me.
