    das Grinsen verging ihm

Er grinste finster. Doch das Grinsen verging ihm, als er vor seinem geistigen Auge eine schreckliche Fratze sah.

Bisher hab ich folgendes: He grinned with a dark look on his face. But his smirk/grin was taken off his face when he saw a terrible grimace before his mind’s eye.

Bin mir aber nicht sicher ob das so passt mit der Übersetzung von "das Grinsen verging ihm", und außerdem wiederholt sich "face", und das gefällt mir nicht...

    Irgendwelche Ideen?

    Vielen Dank!

"was wiped off his face" fänd ich besser.

Und "grin darkly" geht auch :-)

faded is better than evaporated, in my opinion.

    or slowly faded

    I'd say:

He grinned darkly. But his grin slowly faded when a terrible grimace appeared before his mind's eye.

    Oder etwas anders:

"He grinned darkly. But a fearful face appearing before his mind's eye put an end to that."

@3: Just so you know that I don't make this stuff up ;-), three examples:

The strangler's grin evaporated and he raised his hamlike fist.

It must have been that knee that ended his career, because Antwan's grin evaporated and his face went slack.

My expression hardened as my grin evaporated.

Very interesting. Thank you. I'll remember that. So many different ways of saying this - I love it! :)
