    I know what this means, but I am wondering whether anyone has a sound suggestion as to how one might translate this term, which seems to be used mainly in philosophic commentaries, as literally as possible while at the same time ensuring that the English is readable and above all idiomatic?

    Vielen Dank im Voraus.

    to stand out (from / against sth.): sich abheben (gegen etw.);
    to be in contrast to sth.: sich von etw. abheben

    Might it not mean something closer to "depart from" in this case?
