A 40 x 40 mm space is a bit large for a spine, isn't it? And I'm not sure how it could be Bundsteg in the middle of the catalogue either...

40 x 40 mm seems a bit large, yes. Still, the "Bund" of a catalogue is the spine. "Bundsteg" is something different; that's the margin on a page that is towards the "Bund".
