The OP doesn't really make much sense to me. I assume what's meant is: Let's see how this service compares with traditional institutions regarding ordinary matters.

I'm not sure how a service can rival or compare with an institution, though. And what are "ordinary matters"? This all seems like apples and oranges.

I think maybe service provided by traditional institutions is implied? And I'd say "...traditional institutions in ordinary matters."

    agreee with # 3, in

compare would be much better, # 2

I think the OP sentence should be rewritten. I agree that it makes little sense.

Following mikefm in #3, I too would say 'rival so. in sth.' But I'm not sure 'rival' was the best verb for the sentence in the original post -- what about just 'compares to'?

"compares to" is fine if just a comparison is being drawn of course. But "rivals" emphasises the competitive aspect - nothing wrong with that if that is what is meant I'd say.

agree. But I wouldn't use rival in the context of services...

I don't see why not. Companies offering services are rivals in that they are in competition for business.

We don't know if the OP is about competing companies, though, do we? All we know is that there are traditional institutions involved. Whatever that means.

True; I just meant that generally in some contexts "rivals" would work. I wasn't referring specifically to the OP.

    a service rivals institutions?

Companies can be rivals, of course. (Although the word is not used in a positive way in business AFAIK). Services can be unrivalled but it's not the right word in this context IMO

    a service rivals institutions?
no - but the rather clumsily worded OP should read "Let us see how this service rivals the service provided by traditional institutions in ordinary matters." for example. The services provided are being compared - as I see it.  "service provided" is implied (#3).

agreed #13, your suggestion is fine of course.

Just wanted to make it plain and clear that the original sentence needs to be amended.
