Jahn popularized the motto "Frisch, Fromm, Fröhlich, Frei" ("Fresh, Pious, Cheerful, Free") in the early 19th century.

His associations perpetuated the motto 'Hardy, Pious, Cheerful, Free', and Jahn combined his liberal reformism with a nationalist political Vision.
