Aunt Verdella stepped out of their house then, moving like the wind had just gotten knocked out of her. She shrugged and held up her hands, palms up to the sky as if she expected some explanations from God Himself to drop onto them.

When the wind gets knocked out of you, you can't breathe--i.e., you cannot take in air and you think you are about to die.

She was probably moving slowly and haltingly and in anguish.
