An expert on British folklore and mythology, he has held several varied and colourful jobs, including independent record company boss, band manager, production line worker, engineer's 'mate', and media consultant.
Was könnte denn das sein? Sowas wie der Gehilfe eines Technikers oder Ingenieurs?
Das kann m.W. auch ein (See-)Kadett sein
Oh, danke wienergriessler! Drauf wäre ich nie gekommen ... Auf dem Pfad muss ich mal weiterrecherchieren.
On NATO manoeuvres inside the Arctic Circle, Mark slept in tents with the British soldiers in temperatures of -20°C, fired bazookas and drove tanks across the snowy wastes. He was also set on fire by an exploding lamp – and saved by a nearby snow drift.

I don't think (See-)Kadett is the meaning here. See the passage above from the article you link in #3. "fitter's mate" there seems to be referring to the same job as "engineer's 'mate'" in your OP. "mate" basically means "assistant." "Fitter's mate" is a current job title in the UK.
Hm, okay! Also doch eher der Gehilfe eines Technikers oder so was ...
"engineer" ist mE auch ein Lokführer, und sein Gehilfe heißt im Deutschen "Beimann", bei Dampfloks Heizer
#6: Lokführer is "engineer" in AE, but not in BE (where it would be "[train] driver") and BE is explicitly given as the context here. In the UK, anyone who e. g. fixes your washing machine can call themselves an engineer, so Gehilfe eines Technikers as a translation of "engineer's mate" sounds good to me in this context.
