Kommentar		Also note that the capitalization in the OP is wrong. At least colloquially, I wouldn’t say that “trip” is incorrect, but I, too, prefer tour, especially if it was specifically for sightseeing.

Kommentar		If you google for london boat trip you will find plenty of boat trips on offer. So, the word trip is in current use in the context of tours around or through a city.

Kommentar		Boat trip, sightseeing tour by boat, boat ride ... None of those are wrong, so I don't see why anyone would fuss about them. A boat tour isn't wrong either, but it seems less common to me, perhaps partly because it could sound like the tour of a boat. 'Let me show you around my new yacht.' Took a boat trip, went on a boat trip, also both fine. '*Made a boat trip,' however, would be wrong.

Kommentar		I also have no problem with 'boat trip', even 'around the city'. I took a boat trip around a city just this summer! Like hm--us I can't think why anyone would say 'boat trip' is incorrect.

Kommentar		For me, trips are longer and unidirectional, i.e. travelling down a river from A to B. If I just do a bit of water sightseeing in a city, say around the harbour in Hamburg, I would call that a tour. But that may be just me.

Kommentar		Exactly #17. Maybe not necessarily longer, but yes, 'a boat trip down the Nile', 'a boat trip down the Thames', but a 'boat tour of the canals', 'a boat tour of London'.

Kommentar		I don't think I'd make that distinction. I've just gone back and looked at a Whatsapp photo message from our holiday boat trip (which went quite literally round Strasbourg, as the river is a complete loop round the old town) and sure enough I wrote 'boat trip!' to accompany the photo. The Tripadvisor reviews for that tour operator use a mixture of 'tour' and 'trip': https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Revi.... (My #16 was really in response to the rather emphatic #9, rather than your #1.) I see the Strasbourg tour operator and the London tour operator City Cruises call them 'river cruises' or 'boat cruises' which is another option, although less informal and colloquial.

Kommentar		Funny – sporty1 only wanted to know whether it should be 'took a' or 'made a', and here we are, arguing about whether it should be tour, pootle, trip or cruise :-) Definitely 'took' or 'went on', never 'made', like #15 says (though a tour of a yacht will always be a tour of a yacht, not a yacht tour)

Kommentar		TDV, I don't know how you're justifying such a strict distinction. I consider them pretty much interchangeable in everyday speech, and there are plenty of examples of both in use on the internet. Other native speakers in this thread have no problem with boat trip.
