OT re "partial"

##1,2: it’s good to have someone other than a mother listening in on them, since she can be too partial to him.

The modern "translation" is quite fun ("I bet she'll chew him out"!), and I'm sure it's useful to many people. But, quite apart from the fact that it doesn't adequately represent "since nature makes them ...", I think that "partial to him" is misleading. "Partial" in the original surely means "not impartial", "predisposed in [their children's] favour" -- not that their mothers quite like them.
