This is my definition. An amateur chef will create recipes and will vary ingredients in recipes. A home cook may vary some ingredients, but usually doesn’t try to create new recipes and follow most recipes closely.
I consider myself to be an amateur chef.

There are some spectacular gourmet home cooks. In fact, one of my favorite FB cooks is a oncologist that posts up pictures sometimes. She understands flavor, aroma, texture, plating better than 99% of working cooks and chefs that I know. Some of the best food experiences I have had are home cooked by people who have never been in a commercial kitchen. But NONE of those people claim themselves to be chefs.
