    Mit "A und B sind zwei getrennte Schuhe" meine ich Dinge, die obwohl auf ersten Blick ähnlich sein könnten, doch nichts miteinander zu tun haben. Ist dies mit "zwei getrennte Paar Schuhe" gemeint?

    I have never heard "Two different ball games" used as an expression like "Zwei paar Schuhe." Ever.


    One of Rominara's links has someone called Steve UK saying it would work for him. Does that make it an idiomatic expression? I think not.


    A widely used phrase is "It's a whole new ballgame!" but it doesn't mean anything like "zwei paar Schuhe."


    More natural-sounding phrases would include:


    Those are two different things.


    Or, referring to one of the two:


    That's something else entirely.

    That's a whole different thing.


    And there are probably more, but coming up with them would require a higher blood caffeine level than I have at the moment...


    And there's also "That's a different kettle of fish," which, it should be noted, arose from "a fine/pretty kettle of fish" meaning a mess or a muddle.

    Es ist sicherlich keine genauso idiomatische Redewendung wie im Deutschen, aber über 150 Fundstellen belegen den Gebrauch der von Steve erwähnten Phrase, und in geringerem Maße findet man auch "... are two different kettle of fish"

    Die Vorschläge in #7 bedeuten alle "Das ist wieder ein (ganz) anderes Kapitel" (It's a whole new ballgame) und nicht "Das sind zwei verschiedene Paar Schuhe". Sie klingen zwar in englischen Ohren natürlicher und gängiger, sind aber nur anwendbar, wenn nacheinander zwei Sachverhalte mehr oder weniger ausführlich geschildert werden, nicht in einer einzigen Aussage im Sinn von "X und Y gleichzusetzen, wäre Äpfel mit Birnen vergleichen".


    Man könnte natürlich auch das AE-Äquivalent zu "Äpfel und Birnen" heranziehen:


    This is apples and oranges.

    It's like apples and oranges - there is no comparison.

    Not even remotely as idiomatic, so why recommend it as a translation?

    And I get 740 hits for "like comparing apples and shoes". How do either of these results help?
