FWIW, as a layperson, I would read "light" as "not heavy" - in the sense of the plane not being heavily loaded with weight AND/OR carrying only a minimal crew

I afraid the other interpretation, a light, non-challenging mission, seems possible to me too, though.

Is there something in the context to tell you what was making the situation grow more dangerous? Might there be a clue there? My understanding, for instance, is that heavier planes actually do better in bad weather... that would argue against the first interpretation, right?

Edit, oops, too slow again, hadn't seen #6. Also hadn't realized that it was always one and the same landing area. That does seem to argue against challenging, as Harald (dede) pointed out.

Danke sehr für eure hilfreichen Antworten. Ich tendiere auch eher zu der Interpretation, dass das Flugzeug nur leicht bzw. gar nicht beladen war. Die zu evakuierenden Passagiere wurden u.a. instruiert nur einen kleinen Koffer mitzunehmen. Ich kenne mich nicht aus, aber ich schätze, dass es wichtig war, das Flugzeug leicht manövrieren zu können.

Für mich scheint sich das eher nach einfachen Flügen ohne Probleme anzuhören, ich mag mich aber auch irren.

I side with the interpretation of "light" in the sense of not much load, especially since the runway was temporary. I'm not a professional pilot, but modifying "light" with "very" doesn't change the basic meaning of "light" here, just emphasizes that the load was quite low.

In other words, I'd go with a more standard meaning of "llght" than those here who want to mix it up with something like "easy" or "simple."

Martin--cal's answer applies to AE. In BE we don't leave out the "of", even if we sometimes (rather than usually) reduce it to something like "a".
