The correct spelling is "phat" (i.e. only one 't'). The origin is in hip-hop slang (i.e. AE) as has been pointed out already. It is not an acronym (e.g. Pretty Hot And Tempting) as folk etymology would have you believe. Agree with beaner that the word has become less popular in the US in recent years.

I have no insights into how common / popular use of "phat" is in the UK (the OP specifically inquired about BE usage). Any BE native speakers that can clue us in?

raupe: nee, wohl umgekehrt, das englische (fat) ist vom deutschen (fett) abgeleitet. Deutsch ist älter als Englisch (E. gibt es erst ab Einwanderung von Angeln und Sachsen in "England").

"geil" ist "randy", wicked, hot etc....

Gemeint war natuerlich UK usage, sorry fuer den Typo!
"Wicked" erscheint mir als gute Alternative.

hein mück: die beide Sprachen sind westgermanisch, und sind von dieselbe Sprache abgeleitet. Deutsch ist vielleicht eins oder zwei Jahrhunderte älter, aber man kann das bestreiten.

also hier in neuseeland sagen all meine freunde wenn sie von nem "fetten song" oder so sprechen "mean song". die uebersetzung zu "mean" ist zwar eher "böse" aber ich finde, das trifft es in bezug auf musik ganz gut....
