Castle ist eher Burg, palace ist Palast oder Schloss.

castle seems to have some fortification/defence value, a palace like Versailles just splendour... but really just guessing

A castle is or at least looks like a mediaeval (group of) building with a wall around it; its purpose is to defend the residents against attackers.

A palace is a king's (or other person's) representative residence and has no immediate protective purpose.

I think the key word here is "ornate".

doch können bei diesen vielen Gebäuden, die hier in Deutschland "Schloss" genannt werden, wohl eher bauliche Merkmale eine Hilfestellung sein bezüglich der Wortwahl

Da m.E. überhaupt keine eindeutige Unterscheidung möglich ist, hier noch ein Gesichtspunkt:

Es hat z.T. auch mit der Entstehungszeit zu tun.
Je nach regionaler Geschichtslage ist der Übergang von der Zeit der Burgen zu der Zeit der Schlösser verschieden lang und findet zu verschiedenen Zeitpunkten statt.
Im Mittelalter gab es nur Burgen (!), selbst ein sozusagen schloßartiges Gebäude wie die Albrechtsburg in Meißen wird Burg genannt.
Zu den frühen Palästen gehört in Europa (China lassen wir mal ganz außen vor, ja?) z.B. der Papstpalast in Avignon. Hier sieht man noch die burgartige Anlage, aber auch den Übergang zum Prunk. Über teilweise mehrere Jahrhunderte werden noch viele Burgen und nur wenige Paläste gebaut.
Dann schließt sich die Zeit ein, in der keine Burgen mehr, sondern nur Paläste gebaut werden, die meisten in der Tat auf königlicher Ebene angesiedelt, nicht notwendig als Residenz (wie man schon an der Anhäufung in Sanssouci sieht).
Umgekehrt wohnen auch Königshäuser nach wie vor immer wieder in Burgen. Queen Mum liebte Walmer Castle.

Strittig ist die Bezeichnung jedenfalls nur in der Übergangszeit, etwa in der Größenordnung 16./17. Jahrhundert.

Trotzdem bleibt die Schwierigkeit bestehen, dass - wenn man nicht so beschlagen ist wie Du und ein Gebäude zeitlich sofort einordnen kann - den immer richtigen Begriff zu wählen, oder ?

A 'castle has one or more towers, has, what is called 'Zinnen' and 'Schießscharten' in German, and is most likely situated on a hill or mountain top so as to see the enemy approaching, long before he is near the castle . . .

A 'Schloß' (or 'Palace')in turn, has a more 'building'-like character . . .

Nun weiß ich Bescheid........aber Du hast mir damit auch bestätigt, dass man an "baulichen Merkmalen" (in # 9 you gave me a 'POLITICAL' definition, didn't you? ) erkennen kann, welchen Begriff man benutzen muss (siehe mein Beitrag in #10)......nun habe ich diese erhalten - alles bestens !

just wanted to add the word "fort" to the discussion.

A "fort" according to the OED is described as a "fortified building or strategic position" - "strategic position" being for military purposes.

Not necessarily a very old building either. When I was a child I remember regular visits to a 19th century fort on the banks of the Thames (a strategic position should the French attack!). This particular fort was last used in WW2.

Come on, don't be so narrow-minded. Although you are right, you could never explain Schloß Neuschwanstein with that approach. It was meant to be a palace in a typical castle situation and it looks like Disney candy and was intended to leave that impression. Actually, although rulers of certain landstrips (how do I place a ;-) smiley between parentheses?) lived there for certain timeslips, it was no real residence. But still it is a "Schloss" (new spelling, still strange).

Can't we just agree on a "Grauzone"? Usually helps to keep the discussion on a lower emotional level. I really think there are very clear-cut castles and very pompous palaces, but there are also lots of buildings in between.
