Lots of people ask for "eine Kugel (zB) Straciatella." Or just "einmal Straciatella in der Waffel/im Becher."

Carly, you're too used to German scoops. In the US, a dollop is much smaller than a scoop. It's usually used in reference to whipped cream and is roughly a tablespoon or two.

@Bill - You're right, of course! Had forgotten about the dollop of whipped cream. German scoops are really skimpy :-( and cost a minor fortune :-(

@Bill - Now that is one of the (food) things I have really missed - Idaho potatoes! But, did I understand you correctly that one potatoe weighed 1 kg?? Or, did they total 1 kg?

SteffB - yes that sounds like the place.

Carly - I am not kidding. I buy potatoes that weigh maybe 12-14 ozs. each but the Morton's version were at LEAST twice as big. 1 kg EACH I'd say. I had never seen anything like it (and haven't since). They must have their own farm. Everything was like that - the steaks, all the side dishes. And it's all a la carte so it ends up costing a fortune and you can't eat half of it. It's definitely part of the image, but I don't know why you would strive for an image of pure gluttony and excess. OK, off my soapbox now.

@Bill - Now, I'd really love to get my teeth into an Idaho potatoe with sour cream, but think the sight of one that size would make me feel rather ill :-)
Guess such a high-class place would also be insulted should you ask for a doggie bag :-)

Speaking of potatoes - my most painful potato experience was at the company cafeteria when I worked in London. Here's the recipe:
Fill a large baking dish with water.
Throw in 6-8 medium-sized peeled potatoes.
Put the dish in the oven and boil for approx. 1 hr.
Take the dish out and put it on the counter for at least 1 hour. If someone wants a potato, fish it out of the water.

Yes, big potatoes and big chickens were about the only things I missed living in Germany. My first month there I bought a Suppenhuhn to roast. Boy you don't make that mistake twice! But then again, you learn a word through that kind of experience and you NEVER forget it. There are probably better vocabulary-building methods, however...

Carly, She's referring to your putting an "e" on "potato." Dan Quayle was the first Bush's VP and was famous for his slaughter of the English language. Here's a link you might get a kick out of.

Hi Carly. How long ago did you leave our beloved country? Don't you remember Dan Quayle, the Vice President during Bush Sr.'s administration? He is the one who corrected a school child for writing "potato". According to Dan Quayle you should write "potatoe".... :-) Need I say more? :-)

@FujiApple, Have been in Germany continuously since late 1971. Naturally, I know who he is, but couldn't make the connection between Carly Simon and Qualye. That type of news isn't broadcast here in Germany, and I've about given up trying to watch CNN, because it's constant reruns.

If I turn my back for 2 minutes ... Funnily enough, that potato-torturer with his glasses and little summer hat (that seems to be mandatory for the trade in the UK) looked a lot like Erich Honecker.
