    guter Onkel

In this passage I'm trying to translate, it refers to Santa Claus as the "guter Onkel" of the human race. I can't imagine calling him the "good uncle" of the human race. Any ideas on how to best translate the German "guter Onkel" expression into proper English?

It's clearly not uncle Sam, but probably this uncle refers to Onkel in the sense of Patenonkel = godfather but more likely Onkel refers to the tongue that little children use.
However the latter can't be translated since it doesn't exist in the English language.

Ja, das kann man wohl nur sehr frei übersetzen. Der Gute Onkel ist für mich aber auch im Deutschen kein typischer Begriff. Wie wäre es mit kind old man?
