The German term implicitely states that it is a process that can never be considered complete. Therefore I would propose to use the double notion of "process" and the usage of present progressive grammar in translations.

Stimmt, dumm ausgedückt. "Ich bewältige" impliziert, dass ich gerade dabei bin. Aber "Bewältigung" drückt das nicht aus, IMO. Die Bewältigung kann stattfinden, stattgefunden haben, wird stattfinden etc. Ich finde nicht, dass "Vergangenheitsbewältigung" als Wort beinhaltet, dass der Prozess niemals abgeschlossen sein kann.

Das sehe ich auch so. "Bewältigt" werden muss die Vergangenheit nur dann, wenn es keinen Konsens bei der Bewertung historischer Ereignisse oder Vorbehalte bei Entschuldigungen oder Entschädigungen gibt. Sobald nichts mehr ausständig ist und eine allgemein akzeptierte Sicht auf die Vergangenheit vorliegt, ist diese bewältigt.

Es gibt natürlich Verfechter der historischen Erbsünde, die auch nachfolgenden Generationen eine Kollektivschuld am Handeln längst Verstorbener zumessen. Für die zeigt jeder deutsche Neonazi, dass die Deutschen ihre Vergangenheit nicht bewältigt haben, während Neonazis im Ausland einfach Neonazis sind.

Having read all counter arguments, I still stand with my previous proposal.

As history is continuously progressing, dealing with it in terms of "Vergangenheitsbewältigung" can never be considered complete. It is the first part of the compound word that makes it that way, not the second part as used in counter statements here. The term is also not limited to a specific period of history (nazi era), but also applies to the German colonialism era (1880-191x). It also applies to recent history.

Additional question to Gibson's: Would it become progressive by inserting "being" before "reprocessing"?

#15 / #16 - Clearly, it is a gerund, not a progressive form. A progressive tense needs a form of "to be" along with the ing-form, e.g.

I am reprocessing. present progressive

I was reprocessing past progressive

#16 - "being reprocessing" is not grammatically correct, I believe.

History is being repocessed. That is present progressive passive.

edit: I find it interesting that there does not seem to be an easy way out "coming to terms with history", e.g., does not seem to be an idiomatic translation to me, but seems to express the idea in English somewhat correctly.

"reprocessing" does not fit either I think this since "Vergangenheitsbewältigung" seems to me to suggest the idea of a process that leads ro something final as well.
