    English missing

    with empty hands - empty-handed

    Subject

    with empty hands - empty-handed

I think it might depend on the context, but generally speaking, it makes little difference whether someone comes up empty-handed, with his/her hands empty or with empty hands. :-)

"empty-handed" is not necessarily literal. If he came "with empty hands", he would have nothing in his hands (but may have a present in his pocket and so did not come "empty-handed").

    Schwierig... :-)

@vertigox - well I see it as being literal but could be used if, for example, someone stood there with empty hands showing that he had nothing to present but dude seems to take a slightly different view and is not as nit-picking as I am on this. What is your context/sentence?

    Hi dude :-)
