Today's evangelistic country churches are independent of the state, but originally they arose from the local sovereign.

Thanks, Donkey Chain, for your effort!

I am afraid this does not quite catch what I am trying to say though.
Aside from the fact that "evangelisch" translates to "protestant" ("evangelistic" would be "evangelistisch" and is something entirely different) and the term "country churches" would certainly be misleading, I am not referring to the "Fürst" as a person but to his state.
The point is not that the churches were authorized by anyone but that their territory originated in the territory of those "Landesfürstentümer". How can I get this territorial aspect across?

Today's regional protestant churches are independent of the state but arose originally from local sovereign principalities.

Does that help you on your way at all?

Thanks, Robert, that does sound a lot more convincing than all my attempts!
