Wer könnte sich heute noch etwas davon versprechen?

The interviewee is talking about being bugged (telephones etc.) and then the interviewer asks the above question.
I just don't get what it's supposed to mean...? Is it like 'who can expect to face something like that today?' or am I off track?
    Thanks Leos :)

Who could hope to gain anything from that?
    Comment
in diesem Kontext. Die Grundform lautet: "sich etwas versprechen von etwas" = hope to gain something from some other thing, oder auch: hope to profit. Beispiel: "Ich verspreche mir viel von meinem neuen Job: Mehr Geld, mehr Anerkennung usw."

I reckon it's more along the lines of "Who in this day and age would still hope to gain anything from that?".
