Mostly a bird of wild northwestern landscapes, Barrow’s Goldeneyes are striking ducks. Males are crisp black-and-white, with a purplish head, a long white crescent on the face, and a row of white “windows” along the shoulder. Females are a cool gray with rich brown heads and usually a mostly orange-yellow bill. They nest in holes in trees (or in nest boxes) in remote boreal and montane forests—often in old nests of Northern Flickers or Pileated Woodpeckers. In winter and spring, males gather around females to perform acrobatic courtship displays. ...

... Bucephala islandica; the Barrow's Goldeneyes can be found in Northern America and on Iceland. In the rest of Europe it is a rare visitor. They are of course closely related to the common European goldeneye which can also be found on Iceland in low numbers. The Barrow's goldeneye is typically a common bird of the Mývatn Lake where there is abundant insect food as well as mollusks and crustaceans. They breed in lava crevasses and other suitable protected areas. It is worthwhile to notice that the common European goldeneye breeds (Scandinavia and north-eastern Europe) in tree hollows. However, the birches growing near Mývatn are to small to create suitable hollows so the Barrow's has to contend with other "hollows" provided by nature or mankind (buildings like sheds and farmhouses). They are residents and in winter time they move to non-frozen lakes and rivers. ...

Elsewhere, breeding populations occur across the western mountain ranges of North America with small isolated populations in Atlantic coastal areas of Quebec and Labrador. In British Columbia, the majority of the population winters in nearshore coastal waters: the Salish Sea is particularly important, as is Prince William Sound in Alaska. Barrow's goldeneye (Bucephala islandica) is a medium-sized sea duck of the genus Bucephala, the goldeneyes. This bird was named after Sir John Barrow. The genus name is derived from Ancient Greek boukephalos, "bullheaded", from bous, "bull " and kephale, "head", a reference to the bulbous head shape of the bufflehead. The species name islandica means Iceland.[2]

Описание
Исландский гоголь достигает длины 40-48 см, размах крыльев 62-77 см. В целом вид очень походит на обыкновенного гоголя. Самки, молодые птицы и неокрашенные самцы обоих видов не различаются. У окрашенных самцов фиолетово-пурпурная голова (у обыкновенного гоголя зеленая). Голова овальной формы. Клюв выглядит треугольным, короткий. Белое пятно между клювом и глазом, которое характерно для самца в брачном наряде, больше по сравнению с обыкновенным гоголем, отчётливо удлинён наверх и заканчивается поверх глаза в остро вытянутой форме.
У окрашенных самок коричневая голова и серое оперение тела. В брачном наряде клюв чёрный, вне гнездового периода зимой он оранжевый[2]. ...
