"to live door to door" can also be understood in the OP's context:

But somewhere, in some way, they had absorbed corporate basic training, and that somewhere was probably in the suburbs where they live door-to-door-to-door ...

    @ dude:
Yes, the article in the New York Magazine from 1972 does use that expression in the context stated in the OP but neither Merriam-Webster nor Oxford Dictionary offer that definition.
Could the fact that the expression was used in that context be creative license and that the author was just trying to make a point? He did write "door-to-door-to-door".

What's wrong with the obvious "to live next door to each other"?

Obviously, there's nothing wrong with "next to each other," but that's not the point, Werner. "to live door-to-door" may not be the most common way of saying "next door to each other," but it exists, so the OP isn't wrong about his guess/suggestion.

    OP:
Der Vorteil eines Doppelhauses ist es, dass man kostensparend bauen und Tür an Tür wohnen kann, jedoch im eigenen Haus.

For me the translation would be:
The advantage of a duplex (or duplex house) is that you can build in cost savings and live next door, but in the same house.
