Red-billed Chough or Chough (pronounced /ˈtʃʌf/ chuff), Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax, is a bird in the crow family; it is one of only two species in the genus Pyrrhocorax. Its eight subspecies breed on mountains and coastal cliffs from Ireland and Great Britain east through southern Europe and North Africa to Central Asia, India and China.

"Chough" was originally an alternative onomatopoeic name for the Jackdaw, Corvus monedula, based on its call. The similar red-billed species, formerly particularly common in Cornwall, became known initially as "
Cornish Chough" and then just "Chough", the name transferring from one species to the other.

Cornish ChoughThe Chough (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax) is a member of the crow family with a red beak and legs, and an excitable, high-pitched 'chi-ow' call from which it gets its name. It is extremely acrobatic and its tumbling display flights make a truly impressive sight. The Chough is included in the county's coat of arms alongside the miner and the fisherman, reflecting the bird's importance in Cornish culture. It also appears regularly in Cornish legend and it is said that King Arthur was transformed into a chough when he died, the red feet and beak representing his violent, bloody end.

This red-legged, red-billed member of the crow family earned itself the name 'Cornish chough' because of its close association with the county for several hundred years. There can be few instances of such a close association between a county and a bird. Even today, the chough's symbolism for Cornwall can be easily found for it features on the county coat of arms, proudly sitting on top of the crest flanked by a tin miner and fisherman as a striking reminder of the county's proud traditions.
