How many do you need?

None of my dictionaries have the two-word spelling, either (Oxford Dict. of English, New Shorter OED, Oxford Spelling Dictionary), neither does Chambers, OALD or LDOCE. All goodbye and good-bye.
The Oxford Style Manual specifically says "(one word)".

Well, here we go again. Do we trust the old papers or the internet? I spell good-bye with a hyphon, but I don;t claim to perfect.

Hm, difficult choice. Do we trust the world's most renowned dictionary makers, who have perfected their works over centuries and employ expert linguists, or do we trust two Internet dictionaries made up from the infamous Mr Honey's Business Dictionary and edited by anyone who wants to without any special checks?

CMD22: LOL! You've got a point here. Still, the internet dictionaries pick up things the old renowned ones don't: modern terms, slang, modernized spellings, etc...
Maybe Schueler should write a mail to the renowned dic. makers and ask for their advice!

I think this is just one more example of why LEO, though not perfect, is still far more reliable than dict.cc or dict.tu-chemnitz, both of which are already somewhat notorious around here.

Yes, dict.cc can be useful for things like modern slang. But you must admit that 'goodbye' is not modern slang.

Any teacher who relies on internet dictionaries over printed dictionaries deserves to be corrected by his or her students.

#8 - At least most people have heard of "raining cats and dogs", and it's occasionally used in real life, if more often in newspaper headlines, puns, jokes etc. Try Googling "agree like cats and dogs" and you will see thousands of examples - every single one from dictionaries, proverb lists, books of English idioms and so on.

I admit, it does sound like the result of one of our favourite wordgames at home - mismatching similes. You know, cool as a judge, drunk as a pancake, quarrel like a house on fire, agree like cats and dogs.

Richard, diese Redewendung wird uns im Englischunterricht Teil 1, gleich in der ersten Woche (so ungefähr) als d e r englische Ausdruck für "starker Regen" verkauft. Ich habe es dann später im wahren Leben nur in einem von einer 5-jährigen erzählten Witz gehört (how do you know it's raining cats and dogs? You keep stepping into poodles. Ta-da! - well, you had to be there and see her crease up with delight...), sonst nie. It's chucking it down, it's pouring, it's raining hard, tausend Möglichkeiten, aber in DE lernt man "cats and dogs". Deswegen "howler".

I think "agreeing like cats and dogs" actually existed in the Olden Days and predates Mr Honey and co, who have just brought the phrase, zombie-like, back from the dusty library shelves and onto the odd German or Japanese website.

Although I wouldn't quite describe it as a 'howler', since it is not really incorrect, just not all that common.

Good Bye Lenin was translated/corrected for the English market to Goodbye Lenin. Proof, if ever it were needed, that Good Bye is very deutsch - get rid of it.
"Bend it Like Beckham" was of course translated/corrected for the German market and became "Kick it Like Beckham" - this doesn't mean, however, that "to bend" is not an English verb. Cats and dogs are a whole new ball game.

Nach den Zitaten im OED scheint "Good bye" nicht sehr deutsch zu sein, sondern sehr altertuemliches (=echtes) Englisch. :)))

Hm, vielleicht sollte ich mir anstelle des "Ich spreche BE" ein sogar noch snobistischeres "I speak original English" angewoehnen. Es gibt schliesslich keinen Grund, dass nur die nordatlantischen Muttersprachler unter mir leiden sollen. ;)


Ernsthaft: Ausser dem OED-Verweis auf "to say good bye" finde ich keine Woerterbuchbelege fuer die getrennte Schreibweise. Vorschlag zur Guete:

Die beiden Wendungen "to say good bye" aufgrund der OED-Erwaehnung in LEO lassen, die beiden direkten Eintraege Good bye! --- Auf Wiedersehen! und
Good bye! --- Leb wohl! loeschen.
