How long does it take for a piece of plastic to crumble into small particles?

Is it correct - for a piece of plastic...or do you just say :
How long does it take a piece of plastic to crumble into small particles.

and would a native speaker say crumble into small pieces or would he rather say to break down into sm. pieces / or decompose into sm. p.?
