Leaf compost

Leaf mold is what becomes of leaf compost

I only know this as leafmould.

As someone who has a fairly enormous backyard that requires more time than I seem to have, I'm familiar with composting to a degree. Leaves and other yard waste (or biodegradable kitchen waste) become mold only after a considerable time and ultimately (and ideally) turn into humus. But I'm by no means an expert; maybe you know more about this.

I remember one of the panel on the BBC's Gardeners' Question Time emphasizing very firmly that compost and leaf mould are two very different entities. Certainly leaf mould does not at any stage have the very characteristic smell of unfinished compost.

Einfach mal unfachmännisch in den Raum geworfen:

Mould hört sich sehr verwandt an mit "Mulch", was nicht mit Kompost zu verwechseln ist.

Leaf mould is certainly the standard BE term.

Leider gibt es auch das englische Wort

Mulch is not a synonym. Mulch is not composted (yet).
