Da sich die Kritik hier offensichtlich nicht nur gegen die Übersetzung 'Mitteilung' für posting richtet, sondern auch suggeriert, engl. posting für 'Forumsbeitrag' sei falsch und müsse durch post ersetzt werden – wie vereinbart sich das mit den folgenden Einträgen in renommierten britischen und amerikanischen Online-Wörterbüchern?

It's interesting that so far, nearly all speakers in the other thread I cited (Pipper, L.G. BE, patman2 AE), and all of us here (Jurist, me AE), seem to feel exactly the same -- we would indeed see it as wrong, no matter what the dictionaries say, unless someone can find a different context where it actually fits.

The only exceptions so far are California who heard it in a podcast, which made me wonder who wrote the podcast, and Cuau who remembered it from the days of Usenet.

The latter actually sounds plausible to me. Just a guess, but I wonder if the -ing form really could have existed much earlier in the history of the internet, but already come and largely gone, that is, now been almost completely superseded in English. (Possibly even not unlike the near-mythical short-lived Motorola device called, er, a handy ... (-: )

I wondered at first if it might have been chiefly BE. But when I saw that L.G. wondered if it might be chiefly AE, I suspect the answer is no either way -- it just sounds Denglish to all of us.

Or I wondered if someone might have once thought it ought to be the more formal form, more serious-sounding for bibliographic citation. If, for example, MLA or Oxford or someone ever used it in an example of citation style, it could still lead a dying existence in that very specific kind of context.

Or there's the numeric sense -- I believe 'posting' is indeed still used for things like ledger entries in bookkeeping, which could certainly also exist in a computer context. But that wouldn't be a Mitteilung.

Anyway, if anyone wanted to research any of those lines of inquiry (or persuade a student to do a paper ...), we might learn something more. Or someone might still find some persuasive current examples, as opposed to dictionary artifacts alone.

But in the meantime, since the consensus among native speakers is pretty unanimous so far, I personally would be inclined not to go any farther than, say,

post (selten auch:) posting [comp.] - das Posting / der Beitrag
forum post - der Forumsbeitrag / der Forumseintrag
blog post - der Blog-Beitrag / der Blog-Eintrag

refers to two nouns, or just the verb vs. the noun. I can certainly imagine just a participle or a gerund, e.g.,

I can't quite think of 'posting' in an actual noun sense, even for a process, but maybe someone else can.

Not good for use of computers or messages by users. But it exists in other specialized contexts, in addition to bookkeeping, as you mentioned, for which there may be a very technical, insider computer science equivalent.

I made an effort to collect examples, but it's hard to prove a negative. There are a few widely scattered examples for 'posting,' but in general, many more for 'post.'

Regarding the historical aspects: Based on old printouts that I retained, the term "posting" was used to refer to contributions to Usenet newsgroup at least as far back as 1987, by native speakers of both AE and BE. This should be relatively easy to confirm by searching groups.google.com which retains a repository of major newsgroups going back to the 1980s (Google acquired the DejaNews database for this purpose, as I recall).

The Canadian Oxford Dictionary (2001):

An additional dictionary reference plus a few examples from American and British newspapers referring to posts in blogs and social media.

However, what's your opinion? Does 'posting' still sound equally correct to you, and would you or people you know still use it today. Or would you agree with all the other English speakers that it (now) sounds less idiomatic?

In support of my suggestion in #17, I recently found myself tempted to refer to someone's posting (i.e., posts as a group), where it wouldn't have been correct/idiomatic, IMO, to refer to his postings. That would seem to show that posting is (at least now) some sort of collective noun, rather than an alternative to post for German/Denglish Posting, in this context. To the extent this is correct, it is misleading to count search hits unless a search is specifically for postings and correction is made for the many other, correct uses of postings, including but not limited to military post assignments and other job postings.
