The phrase "God helps those who help themselves" is a popular motto that emphasizes the importance of self-initiative and agency. The expression is still famous around the globe and used to inspire people for self help, here is one example sentence in English: "You better start preparing for the test because God helps those who help themselves."[1] 

The phrase originated in ancient Greece and may originally have been proverbial. It is illustrated by two of Aesop's Fables and a similar sentiment is found in ancient Greek drama. Although it has been commonly attributed to Benjamin Franklin, the modern English wording appears earlier in Algernon Sidney's work. 

The phrase is often mistaken as a scriptural quote, though it is not stated verbatim in the Bible.

Hilf dir selbst, so hilft dir Gott ist eine sprichwörtliche Aufforderung, die Initiative in die eigene Hand zu nehmen und keinem anderen zu überlassen. Sie warnt davor, sich bei der Bewältigung des Lebens zu sehr auf Götter, höhere Mächte oder andere Menschen zu verlassen.

Aber ich kann euch, liebe Eidgenossen! hier unter freiem Himmel etwas Seltsames anvertrauen sooft das Vaterland in Gefahr ist, fangen sie ganz sachte an, an Gott zu glauben; erst jeder leis für sich, dann immer lauter, bis sich einer dem andern verrät und sie dann zusammen eine wunderliche Theologie treiben, deren erster und einziger Hauptsatz lautet:[294] Hilf dir selbst, so hilft dir Gott!

 Woher kommt „hilf dir selbst, so hilft dir Gott“? 

Es gehört auch in einen großen Bereich von Sprichwörtern in anderen Ländern. Also da heißt es zum Beispiel „Gott hilft dir, aber er liebt die Ruderer“. Das sagen auch die Leute. Oder im Arabischen „vertraue auch Allah, aber binde dein Kamel an“.

Wir sind nun mal auf Gott und seine Hilfe angewiesen.Es gibt mehr Leute als man denkt, welche meinen, dass der Satz «Hilf dir selbst, dann hilft dir Gott» in der Bibel steht.

Die im Engl. wie im Dt. sehr verbreitete, sprichwörtliche Redensart fehlt bisher in LEO.

Es gibt in beiden Sprachen verschiedene Varianten. Ich würde vorschlagen, jeweils die beiden eindeutig vorherrschenden Versionen zusammengefasst in einem Eintrag zu kombinieren (Abweichung ist jeweils nur ein Wort).

IIch weiß nicht, ob es eine elegante Möglichkeit gibt, darauf hinzuweisen, dass im Dt. auch noch die Groß-/Kleinschreibung des "dir/Dir" schwankt

Weitere Formulierungen (s.o)/Paarungen könnten als seltenere Varianten zusätzlich aufgenommen werden.
