Si tratta di un uccello di dimensioni relativamente grandi, è infatti lungo circa 70 cm e pesa intorno ai 1980- 2150 g[senza fonte]. I maschi adulti hanno una cresta a ciuffo di color verde e un piumaggio multicolore su tutto il corpo, in particolare il collo è rosso rame una macchia bianca sul dorso, la coda è fulva con le punte nere. Le femmine, come tutti i lofofri e molti dei fagianidi, sono meno sgargianti: la parte superiore di queste è infatti di color marrone e nero; il collo presenta una striscia bianca così come le penne della coda.
