Der Edwardsfasan (Lophura edwardsi) ist ausschließlich in den Flachland-Wäldern Zentral-Vietnams beheimatet. Diese Wälder, über denen im Vietnamkrieg bis 1975 72 Millionen Liter Pflanzengifte als Entlaubungsmittel versprüht wurden, sind heute bis auf wenige Reste abgeholzt und haben menschlichen Siedlungen und Ackerflächen Platz gemacht. Die letzten Edwardsfasanen wurden Ende der 1990er Jahre entdeckt. Seither gab es keine gesicherten Nachweise mehr. Auch eine intensive Suche der WPA mit Kamerafallen im Jahr 2011 in einem der besten verbliebenen Lebensräume blieb leider erfolglos. ...

Der Edwardsfasan ist in seiner vietnamesischen Heimat vom Aussterben bedroht. Sein ex situ-Bestand wird durch ein gemeinsames Zuchtbuch von EAZA und der World Pheasant Association gefördert. Der Art wäre aber eine noch weitere Verbreitung in unseren Zoos zu wünschen, zumal Arten- und Lebensraumschutz in Südostasien ein immer wiederkehrendes Thema von Aktionen und Kampagnen der Zooverbände ist.
