... Abstract: The Madagascar or Bernier's Teal Anas bernieri was first described in 1860, after which it disappeared again. Very few were seen by early European travellers and, more unusually, almost no specimens were collected. The thorough Franco-Anglo-Americaine expedition of 1929-1932 collected two specimens, although the leader A.L.Rand did not see it at all. Only one individual, a female, reached Europe alive, living several years from 1927 at Cleres, the collection of Jean Delacour. It was not until 1970 that reasonable numbers of Madagascar Teal were found, in lakes north of Ambereny in western Madagascar ...

... Madagascar Teal Anas bernieri is endemic to western Madagascar where it is restricted to mangroves and coastal wetlands.
Poorly studied before Durrell initiated in-situ work in Menabe in 1992 this species is considered Endangered by IUCN.
Durrell’s in-situ study and conservation programme began in 1992 with surveys of priority sites and has continued to date with surveys and direct conservation including village awareness programmes, nest location, diet studies and ringing. Durrell employs several wetland staff in Madagascar, principally in the west, and has assisted the government with development of the Ramsar network. ...

Bernier's Teals (Anas bernieri) - also commonly known as Madagascar Teals - are ducks found only along the west coast of the island of Madagascar.
Their numbers have been declining and their continued existence is threatened because of trapping, shooting and destruction of their forest habitats. They favor mangroves and open shallow ponds and lakes, preferably brackish.
Description
Bernier's Teals measure 40 to 45 cm in length. The plumage is mostly warm brown with conspicuous black scalloping to the feathers, which is heaviest on the flanks and chest. ...

Bernier's teal (Anas bernieri), also known as the Madagascar teal, is a species of duck in the genus Anas. It is endemic to Madagascar, where it is found only along the west coast. Part of the "grey teal" complex found throughout Australasia, it is most closely related to the Andaman teal.
Taxonomy
The Bernier's teal was first described by the German ornithologist Gustav Hartlaub in 1860 under the binomial name Querquedula bernieri.[2][3] It is one of many dabbling ducks in the genus Anas.[4] It is one of the "grey teals", a group of related ducks found across Australasia. DNA studies suggest that it may have been a sister species with Sauzier's teal (which was found on the nearby islands of Mauritius and Réunion until it became extinct). Studies further suggest that its closest living relative is the Andaman teal, and confirm that it is related to the gray teal.[5] There are no subspecies.[6] ...
