... The hook-billed hermit (Glaucis dohrnii) is now restricted to lowland Atlantic forests in eastern Brazil in the states of Bahia and Espírito Santo. There are estimated to be around 50–250 individuals remaining in highly fragmented and scattered remnants of the original habitat covering an area of perhaps less than 39 mi2 (100 km2); its original range may once have been as large as 13,514 mi2 (35,000 km2). It is the only trochilid in CITES Appendix I. This part of Brazil is densely populated and the influx of people continues unabated, so roads, settlements, and agriculture in the form of coffee, banana, and rubber plantations is eating into the forest. ...

     ... Threats

The lowland forests of east Brazil have been fragmented and destroyed, and this is considered to be the principal cause of its decline. Although there are recent records from two reserves, these are under pressure from settlers, suffer from fire and road construction and generally provide inadequate protection. Perhaps most importantly, they protect few watercourses and consequently little suitable habitat for this species. The new owners of Estação Veracruz have apparently abandoned plans to clear the forest (F. Olmos in litt. 1999). ...

The Hook-billed Hermit (Glaucis dohrnii - Bourcier and Mulsant, 1852 Synonym: Ramphodon dohrnii - Sibley and Monroe, 1990, 1993) was named after German entomologist Karl August Dohrn.

This rare South American (Brazilian) hummingbird is globally known as Ermitaño de Espírito Santo (Spanish), Colibri de Dohrn (French), Bronzeschwanz-Schattenkolibri (German).

Its numbers and distribution has declined significantly due to habitat destruction and fragmentation, sensitivity to habitat disturbances, changing migration patterns and hunting for their feathers.

It is estimated that less than 500 of them are still found in their natural range. Officially, the Hook-billed Hermit is the only hummingbird species that is listed under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). ...

The hook-billed hermit (Glaucis dohrnii) is an endangered species of hummingbird in the family Trochilidae.[2] It is found in humid forests in eastern Brazil, with recent records from the states of Espírito Santo and Bahia only. It resembles the far more common rufous-breasted hermit, but has a straighter bill and lacks rufous in the tail. It is threatened by habitat loss and changing migration patterns.
